How to use a Big Green Egg for Grilling, Smoking and Baking
If you feel daunted at the idea of using a Big Green Egg, don’t be. Although it’s slightly different than other grills or cookers, it is relatively easy to use, and you’ll be more than satisfied with the results (restaurant quality grilling
, smoking and even baking). In fact, this type of grill is so versatile that it can be used instead of an oven. Read on to find out more about how to use the Big Green Egg grill, and why you need one.
Grilling with the Big Green Egg
This grill can reach a temperature of about 750 degrees, which is ideal for searing meats. The temperature is also easy to adjust (through the vents on the top and bottom of the grill), and it heats up quickly so you don’t have to wait hours to get grilling. In addition to searing meats, try grilling chicken, burgers, fish or even pizza on your Big Green Egg grill. Opt for natural charcoal lumps, which are better for the environment and heat up faster and hotter than briquettes.
Smoking with the Big Green Egg
For smoking, you’ll need a combination of charcoal and wood chips (pre-soaked if you can, and go for the fruit wood of your choice). First do a layer of charcoal, then a layer of wood chips, then a layer of charcoal, and finally one final layer of wood chips (until it reaches the top of the firebox). Put the green egg grill at a temperature of about 200 to 250 degree for smoking, and use the plate setter (one of the big green egg accessories), which has feet that elevate the food off the direct heat.
Using the Big Green Egg as an oven
Unlike most other grills and smokers, the big green egg can be used as an oven. This is possible thanks to its ceramic walls that keeps in moisture and control temperature. Feel free to bake main meals (casseroles, vegetables and more) as well as desserts such as cakes, breads and more, using the plate setter.
Easy to clean, safe and fuel efficient
On one hand, unlike most grills, the green egg grill won’t burn you if you touch it while it’s cooking something. On the other hand, it is easier to clean up than other grills: just leave it on for a few minutes after you’ve finished using it and it will burn off residue on its own. To finish up, just scrap away any leftover residue and empty the ashtray at the bottom. The final benefit is that you don’t have to use much charcoal at all, and can reuse the charcoal again (multiple times), making this a very fuel-efficient option, saving you money on charcoal.
If you’re looking for an easy to use, all in one, grill, smoker and oven that is safe, easy to clean, energy efficient and produces restaurant quality food, than look no further than the Big Green Egg.
