TECHNIQUE:
- Call and Mouth Placement:
- Hold the call to your mouth with the reed on top and the lip stop on bottom. Place your top lip on the top of the call opening, with your bottom lip against the reed. Use your saliva to wet your bottom lip and the reed.
- Hand Control:
- Cup your hands around the open end of the tube to control pitch and volume. Open for louder, higher notes; close for softer, deeper tones.
- Calling:
- Yelp: Using lower lip pressure, blow lightly with mouth slightly open, producing the first syllable of the hen turkey yelp. To produce the second syllable, make the previous sound but drop your lip and lower jaw. Experiment with placement and pressure.
- Gobble: Use a quicker and harder burst of air with varying lip pressure while saying “took-a, took-a, took-a.”
- Goose Honk: Angle the tube slightly downwards, using one hand to hold the call and the other cupped over the open end to shape and muffle the sound. Using a burst of air from your diaphragm, with a little bit of growl from your throat, push out a strong burst of air then cut it off sharply saying the words “who-unk.” String together the words “honk” and “who-unk” adding changes to your cupped hand and variations in pitch and volume to be realistic.
