I’ve been a hunter since the age of 15 when I got a rifle and two gun slings for my birthday. I’ve hunted all sorts of game; from deer to rabbit to geese and turkeys. I’ve learned a few very important lessons in my time: Never walk with a gun unless the safety is on. Always have good boots. Remember to turn your cell phone off because otherwise you’ll get a call just when the game is getting close (really!). And sometimes the best hunting is not anywhere close to where you parked the truck.
When you start out on a hunt you never know how far it will take you. You may mean to walk a quarter of a mile, but then you end up five miles from where you parked. Along the way you climb over fences, scamper over logs, plow through underbrush, and wade through creeks.
If you’re far from the truck and you’re lucky enough to bag your game, then you have a whole new set of challenges getting it back over all those obstacles at the same time you’re carrying your equipment. I learned early in my life the value of good gun slings.
Gun Slings Prevent Accidents
Imagine going over an obstacle course with your hands full. You’d fail almost immediately. Yet that’s exactly what some hunters try to do when they carry their guns on the hunt, but they neglect to get a quality gun sling. Carrying your gun in your hands means you can’t use them to help balance, or pull yourself over obstacles, or even hold branches out of your face.
It’s hard—and dangerous—to climb a barbed wire fence while holding a gun. Or to wade through a slippery creek while clutching a loaded rifle. There are too many chances for an accident to happen when you try to go through thick underbrush with your hands unavailable to you in the event of a fall.
Gun Slings Prevent Fatigue
In addition to the safety issue is the fact that your arms get tired when you’ve been carrying a loaded rifle for five miles through the underbrush! It’s just common sense to have a good gun sling to carry the load for you.
