You know it never fails. You can have great weather for most of your excursions, but then there’s that one that slips in that is the nightmare of all weather scenarios, either driving wind or blizzard conditions for snow and it’s either so wet or so cold that it’s all you can do to keep your hands on your gear let alone a flashlight. But you have to see what you’re doing so what is the solution? Obviously you need a better flashlight arrangement or you could get hurt, lose your gear, lose your way or a combination of all three. And then there is the problem of dawn and dusk and the need you have for two hands to set up and take down the decoys. So again, what’s the answer?
The answer is head-mounted flashlights. No, these aren’t the kind that miners wear because that would be impractical. No, these are the kind that smart hunters wear. Browning and Streamlight have come up with several types of head-mounted flashlights all designed with the hunter in mind. The varieties fall into two categories; flashlights that mount to your head with a strap or harness arrangement or flashlights that are built into your cap. Both allow hands free use and which you choose is a question of personal style and ease of use. What works for one may not work for another.
Browning came out with a flashlight that clips onto the bill of your baseball cap. They even provide a cap when you buy the flashlight. It is a simple yet effective device that consists of 2 white LEDs and 2 green LEDs. Both with 19 Lumens, you get a 10 hour life with the white LEDs and 48 hour life with the green LEDs. The nice thing about these is that when you don’t need them you can just put the clip in your pocket and move on, but the flashlight is always with you and it takes up virtually no space.
Streamlight offers a water resistant, xenon LED combination headlamp that has one superbright xenon light and three night vision green LEDs. The flashlight is attached to a harness that fits on your head. The flashlight can be tilted 90 degrees so you can get the light exactly where you need it without having to twist your head to do it, and it’s only 2 ½ inches wide and 2 ½ inches deep so it isn’t an unwieldy and distracting presence on your head. So are things looking up?
Check put these and other varieties of head-mounted flashlights and decide which would work best for you. Your safety and the safety of your hunting buddies could depend on it.
