i’ve been hunting since i was nine years old.  i still remember my first hunt: the excitement building the night before, going to sleep on the sofa in front of the wood burning stove in the living room, hearing the rustle of my father getting ready in the kitchen filtering in through my dreams, and finally the waking sensation as he shook me out of my slumber.

we climbed in the truck and headed out to my uncle’s land.  it was so early it was still dark out.  i remember looking out at the shadows of the trees and wondering if i would get anything that day.

as i followed my dad through a frost-covered field, i stepped onto an ice-covered puddle that was only a few inches deep.  my foot punched through the thin sheet of ice and my tennis shoe was immediately soaked with freezing water.

i still had fun the rest of the day, but when i think of that day the most vivid recollection is the sudden freeze that engulfed my foot.  i learned a valuable lesson: if your feet are warm, you’ll feel better.
