I took my son (and my new duck call!) on his first duck hunt last fall. To me, the fall is the best time to hunt. The crisp, cool air that slowly warms as the day goes by but never gets too hot sets the perfect backdrop. The vividly-colored leaves give you something to watch while you wait for your game to come it.
We got up at 3 a.m. so we could be sure we had everything packed and be well on our way to the hunt site in time to get there before sunrise. We parked the truck and poured mugs of steaming coffee from the thermos I had brought along. After a few minutes of quiet reflection, we shouldered our equipment and set off through the underbrush.
It’s Easy to Learn to Use a Duck Call
We got to a little pond I know of about 30 minutes before sunrise. We hunkered down into a comfortable spot and, as the first rays of sunlight began to peek over the horizon, I pulled out my duck call and went to work.
It didn’t seem like it was too long—maybe 40 minutes, maybe a little more—before I heard a response. As the flock came in low over the water I glanced at the look on my son’s face. It made the whole experience worthwhile.
Duck Calls Are Inexpensive.
A good duck call is well worth the small investment. Pick one up, and learn to work it, and you can have more ducks than you know what to do with coming right to your hunting spot.
A great thing about a duck call is it’s easy to slip in a pocket to take with you when you’re on the move, so you’re always ready to practice whenever you have a few spare moments. It doesn’t take too long to master using a call and then you’re all set for your next hunt.
If you’ve had a hard time with your duck hunts, maybe it’s time to try something new. Pick up one of our duck calls today and see what a difference they make!
